Expat: Where to go?

I've done a bit of tax law research on some countries I'm interested in, which I'll summarise here for your enlightenment.

Countries that do not tax foreign source income or capital gains:

Bahamas
Costa Rica
Panama
Philippines
Uruguay

Countries that do not tax capital gains on long-tem shares:

Czech Republic - 15% income tax rate
Portugal - 20% income tax rate for dividends

Countries that do not tax "foreign source income" will not require you to declare income from foreign investment sources, so you only pay tax on local earnings. This makes them attractive retirement destinations, as your dividends, pension or capital gains will not be taxed (except by the source country).

I left Singapore off the list as it is expensive. I also did not include the Dominican Republic, Chile and New Zealand, which do not tax your foreign source income for the first 2, 3 and 4 years respectively, but then start taxing it once you are addicted to the local lifestyle. Switerland and Monaco are suitable only for multi-millionaires($20 million plus).

Italy is worth an honourable mention as it taxes dividends and capital gains at a rate of 12.5%, which is OK.

While tax is obviously not the only reason to go to a country, it is something you should take into account.

Belize has some good things going for it.

This country really isn't on my radar personally, but it might just be perfect for others.

I'm not up on all the residency options, but I am aware of one called QRP (Qualified Retired Persons). If you are age 45+ and can prove a guaranteed income of $2,000 US per month, Belize is a viable option.

**ah, 'where to go?' the most burning question for expats, no?

there are many factors one should examine while planning a long term expatriate destination.
but that goes without saying, right?
OK let's take a look at just one.

CLIMATE
and as an environmental analyst, climate is one of the first factors i take into consideration.
there are pluses and minuses in every locale. for example, i grew up in los angeles' wonderful mediterranean climate, one of only 5 places on earth which such. the bad side is that it, as well as one of
the other places (Santiago, Chile) sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire which if you don't know means one thing.

90% of the worlds quakes happen within that ring.
80% of the big ones, too.

and while many first world societies have solid structural
engineering to handle even massive tremors, a developing
country could get sent back almost to the stone age with
6.0, something we definitely worry about in California, but
won't lose more than a couple hours sleep. the eartquake
in rome this year measured about 6.3 and killed some 300.

then there's also hurricanes.

i have 2 properties here in colombia:
a home in bogota and my primary residence
here on the caribbean coast.
while 'cane season is officially from aug-nov,
we get ZERO hurricanes. topographically we
are outside the hotzone and yes, catch the tail ends
of most major storm systems but they land here as
minor tropical storms at most. nothing in the form
of destructive hurricane force winds.

which leads us to the 3 subtopics under Climate
that any serious man needs to take under consideration:

we've just touched on #1 Physical Climate. but there is also

#2 Cultural Climate
cultural climate manifests itself (for MGTOW purposes)
in 3 main forms:

physical infrastructure of a country (paved roads, buildings, traffic, bridges, housing, electric grid, potable water, etc.)

it's business infrastructure (chamber of commerce, banking/finance, internet access/wi-fi, real estate transactions and ease of facilitation, etc.)

and medical infrastructure (adequate health care, hospitals, nursing, emergency rooms, re: swine flu).

for brevity's sake, let's take a look at

#3 Political Climate
political climate can be expressed (again for MGTOW) in 2 forms:
political stability and economic stability. either of these 2 can turn
on a dime. recent events in thailand and iceland are perfect
examples of each.

so to recap (and keep you from boredom) let's take
a look at where we stand on just the climate factor
alone, shall we?

I. Climate

under climate we have the three subfactors: Physical, Cultural, and Political.
A. Physical Climate
1. Mild/Temperate Climates
2. Extreme Climates

B. Cultural Climate
1. Business Infrastructure
2. Medical Infrastructure
3. Physical Infrastructure

C. Political Climate
1. Political Stability
2. Economic Stability

as you can see, expatriation is a serious endeavor and should not
be treated lightly. what i've shown you above is part of the curriculum i'm teaching in the expat ecourse. that's just one unit within 5 different modules.
